SLEEP PROBLEMS AND INSOMNIA
Having trouble sleeping, having trouble falling asleep or being restless? You're really not the only one, more than 20% of people suffer from it. Sleep problems are common in young people, but also in older people. Notable: 2 times more in women than in men.
MAIN FACTORS OF SLEEP DISORDER
Insomnia is the most common form of sleep problems. Symptoms include problems falling asleep, staying awake for a long time, waking up too early and not being able to fall asleep. They are usually stress-related and are normally temporary in nature. If the symptoms persist for more than ± 3 months, it is chronic insomnia.
10 NATURAL INGREDIENTS
These special sleep patches contain a mix of 10 natural ingredients that improve the entire sleep cycle. The main ingredient is magnesium, which stimulates the body to produce melatonin. There are numerous studies showing that magnesium plays an important role in sleep processes. There sleep patches contain several natural sleep aids that are effective for sleep problems. The advantage is that these are non-addictive and have hardly any side effects.
Magnesium malate (400mg)
Magnesium is a common mineral and every cell in the human body needs this mineral. Magnesium is involved in the regulation of the stress hormone cortisol and magnesium lowers cortisol production. Magnesium deficiency makes sleep lighter and more restless. Magnesium stimulates the body to make its own melatonin.
Potassium (65mg)
Potassium also plays an important role in sleep. Potassium is an essential mineral salt, also called ‘the good salt’. It is best known for its role in regulating blood pressure and it works together with magnesium to improve sleep, among other things. Potassium deficiency can cause fatigue and insomnia. When you think of potassium, bananas quickly come to mind. While bananas are a good source of potassium, they are not the best. Bananas contain about 10% of the recommended daily allowance, which is pretty low.
5-HTP (L-tryptophan)
5-HTP stands for 5-hydroxytryptophan and this is an amino acid. This substance causes the production of serotonin and this stimulates the production of melatonin. There is plenty of evidence that taking 5-HTP helps with insomnia because it has a sedative effect. However, you should not use 5-HTP as a ‘main ingredient’ against insomnia. Increasing serotonin levels can actually cause other substances such as dopamine to decrease. 5-HTP can also enhance the effect of antidepressants, for example, which cause excess serotonin. Using 5-HTP is better when it is part of a formulation in small amounts. Then it can enhance other substances or act as a helping hand.
Zinc (5mg)
Zinc is a trace element and this is a mineral of which you only need a very small amount. A high zinc concentration may be associated with falling asleep better. Moreover, zinc can help you improve both sleep duration and sleep quality.
Valerian root (Valeriana officinalis)
Valerian is officially a (herbal) medicine, so it is scientifically proven to promote sleep. The root of the valerian plant contains a valeric acid that acts as a neurotransmitter in the nervous system and has a calming and soothing effect. Valeric acid makes contact with the GABA receptor in the brain. This is an important receptor that relaxes muscles and reduces anxious feelings or restlessness.
Passion flower (Passiflora caerulea)
Passiflora became popular in Europe as a calming tea in the 16th century after it was discovered in Peru. Not much research has been done on Passiflora, but it is known to have analgesic properties and can improve sleep quality.
Ashwaghandha
Ashwagandha is a calming adaptogen that supports the body to achieve balance. An adaptogen activates the body to improve its self-healing ability. The indications for ashwagandha are based on traditional use and are safe to use, even at higher doses and long-term use.
L-theanine
L-theanine is an amino acid found in tea leaves and was discovered in Japan. L-theanine helps your body relax and has a sleep-inducing effect, as it can trigger a number of processes in your brain. For instance, it helps your brain produce more GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid), serotonin and dopamine. These substances are also called neurotransmitters and they regulate sleep processes.
